Biblical Counseling Training Session 1

September 10, 2023 Speaker: Chris Oswald Series: Biblical Counseling

Hi friends, a final reminder that after services this morning, we will hold our first training session for biblical counseling. You can find the outline below and we will also record the audio.

I will need lots of help reading these passages, so please come "armed" with your bibles. :)

Introduction

This is an extension of our Theological Leaders Program. We launched TLP with the intention of developing people who fit the description of Matthew 13:52

And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.”

We want to help people become trained for the kingdom of heaven who like the master of a house, can bring out the treasures of God to care for people in need.

Starting in Galatians

Throughout this fall, we will examine Paul's "restorative work" toward the Galatians. Today we will set out some of the basic ideas inherent in the restoration of Christians "caught" in a trespass.

"Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." -- Galatians 6:1-2

I. The Problem — “If anyone is caught in any transgression…”
  1. Flesh & Spirit at war (Galatians 5:17)
    1. Works of the flesh are anti-human flourishing (Galatians 5:19-20)
    2. Works of the Spirit are pro-human flourishing (Galatians 5:22-23)
  2. Other Biblical Data
    1. Sin “so easily” entangles (Hebrews 12:1)
    2. Being overtaken is common (1 Corinthians 10:13)
    3. We want to do our best to understand the problem from a biblical perspective so that we apply biblical prescriptions.
    4. Problems can be complex (1 Thessalonians 5:14)
II. The People God Uses to Help — “…you who are spiritual…”
  1. The Spirit produces change (5:17, 22-23)
  2. The Spirit uses people to produce change (Romans 10:14-15, Romans 15:14, Hebrews 10:24)
  3. Unfortunately, there are more wrecks than restorers
  4. Being a restorer is a great honor (James 5:19-20)
  5. These people have one qualification (…you who are spiritual…)
    1. Your character is more important than your competency. Your spirituality is more important than your skill.
III. The Purpose — “…should restore him.”
  1. This is the catharsis of God
    1. Three acts in the story
      1. Act one — getting to know the characters (foreshadowing)
      2. Act two — crisis
      3. Act three — catharsis (resolution that moves the protagonist forward…beyond where he started).
    2. Sometimes the individual wants to go back to “before.” But that is never the Spirit’s goal. The Spirit wants to take new ground.

IV. The Process — “with a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ.”
  1. Gently — “with a spirit of gentleness”
  2. Watchfully — “keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted”
  3. Practically — “bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ.”

V. The Promises
  1. Everything I just laid before you has been sitting in your bible this whole time.
  2. Matthew 13:52
  3. 2 Timothy 3:16
